I am a graphic designer and this assignment was probably the one I was the most comfortable with because I am so comfortable at using Photoshop/ Illustrator. I decided to use the photo of my friend wearing the masked identity mask that I created on a previous project for this class. I picked the photo of him covering his face as if he was ashamed or scared of the unknown. Social media nowadays creates people to have very awkward meetings when they see each other in person so I decided to use that as a concept. The concept behind the design I constructed was the idea of social media and texting. Everyone nowadays has an iPhone or a smartphone and sometimes they do not clearly express themselves through words but through emojis. Each emoji that was either directly to the right or left of the middle figure was a description how they were feeling about the text message in the middle. I thought it was interesting concept because no one really knows how they feel about certain things they are asked but rather use an emoji to express their emotion.
While I was deciding what to create for my paper hybrids I decided to focus more on letting myself go and letting the art speak for itself. The first one I constructed was the purple, green, and blue hybrid. As I was constructing it I realized it started to shape itself into a boat or an airplane. I chose not to plan out what kind of structure I wanted but chose to gather as much of the paper I molded and see what I could come up with. The second one I constructed was the brown, orange, and yellow hybrid. Again I use the same technique as I did with the previous hybrid. I decided to try and use and decide what kind of shape I could get with the remaining paper I had. I finally realized my paper hybrid sorta looked like a baseball court with a basketball hoop and everything. The paper hybrid project was really intriguing because I had to construct a unusual shape out of glued paper and adding color to it made it come out very delightful.
The color swatches I choose to represent my paper hybrids were orange, blue, purple, green, brown, white.
As I was coming up with ideas I really had dig up memories of what I enjoyed when I was younger that I could create for my memento. I realized I spent most of my elementary-middle school days either on the baseball field playing baseball or sitting in the bleachers at a Rays or Red Sox's game. So I decided to recreate a baseball diamond for my memento. We were only allowed three materials so that was my hardest challenge. I decided to use balsa wood, red ink, and green pool table felt. The balsa wood represented the wooden bats that the MLB players would use to during the games. The red ink I decided to use it as a color I would see a lot during Red Sox's game because their main colors were mainly red and blue. Finally I decided to use the green pool table felt to represent as the grass MLB players and I would play on. Although the MLB players and I did not play on green pool table felt , I decided to represent it as grass because it reminded me of a smooth surface that I would play on every Saturday morning.
I completely changed what my structure looked like from a triangle style diamond shape to a square shape that looks like a baseball diamond.
